Don’t Turn Your Back on Your Big Dreams

Posted on July 9, 2024

If you’re like most people, you have an idea in your head about some exciting, highly challenging goal you wish you could achieve. The thought keeps hanging around in your imagination, maybe even haunting you and begging for attention. For certain reasons, though, you consider the idea out of reach. You keep dismissing it as just wishful thinking.

You try to let go of the idea, but it won’t let go of you.

That’s a signal.

I believe you should take your biggest and boldest dreams seriously. Very seriously. In fact, I believe your most audacious aspirations are there on purpose—to define you, to shape your life, and to call forth your true potential.

Consider this. Maybe your biggest wants or ambitions are more than just possibilities, maybe they’re responsibilities. Or something like divine invitations. If you compromise, downsize, or abandon your big dreams, could you be violating some higher plan? Are you rejecting what the Universe is offering you?

Think I’m getting too esoteric or mystical? Don’t shake me off.

Here’s what I’ve found over my many years as a psychologist. It seems that the person with fierce desire for a daunting goal typically has the potential to achieve it. It’s almost like a law of nature, as if your strongest wants are somehow molded to align with your capabilities and call them forth more fully.

Yes, I believe a bold ambition that quickens your emotions is born out of your inherent ability to reach that goal. If the idea keeps gnawing at you, and if you have fire in your heart to achieve it, my bet is the dream can be yours. But I’m going even further here—I think you have a certain duty to honor that possibility.

This is not to say that your success is guaranteed. Life is full of surprises, and big goals do present challenges. But new risks can be worth taking because they make you stretch. They bend your life’s arc in more promising directions, give you richer experiences, and leave you better off. Even when you fail!

Of course, it’s common for people to turn their back on their biggest dreams. They even justify this as showing good judgement, because they consider their goals unrealistic or too difficult to achieve. But people often miscalculate, overestimating a goal’s difficulty and underestimating their own abilities.

It’s easy to get the math wrong when you think about scaling up your objectives. Simple changes in your approach can produce far better outcomes. I’ll give you a couple of examples:

  • Let’s say you’re seriously hungry for pizza. One 8-inch pizza won’t be enough, so you decide to order two of them. But if you order a16-inch pizza, instead of just doubling the amount you’ll get four times as much.
  • Maybe you’re trying to fly a kite and the 5-mph wind isn’t working for you. So, you change your location, catch a 10-mph wind, and your kite sails like a hawk. That’s because the 10-mph wind isn’t double the force of the 5-mph wind, it’s four times as forceful.

Doubling the size of your goal does not mean it will be twice as difficult to achieve. Big goals drive new behaviors. They force you toward strategies and tactics that are different but not necessarily harder. Those changes in your approach can produce surprisingly greater results.

A bold ambition that stirs your heart is not inert. It has energy. It’s a living possibility. And it deserves your trust.

When you start working toward a goal you love, the goal starts working hard to help you. It’s a fascinating dynamic. An ethereal power comes into play—an Unseen Force born of your sense of purpose—and it’s a game changer.

Your biggest dreams suggest what you’re capable of achieving. Don’t turn your back on them.
