Your Personal Psychology of Success

Posted on April 30, 2024

There are so many ways to create a successful career or build a great company.

Over the years I’ve worked with hundreds of top executives and other high achievers. Guess what—they vary massively in their modus operandi.

This is as it should be.

Your game plan for success should be carefully shaped to fit you. Because you are one-of-a-kind.

  • You have an exclusive mix of talents, skills, ambitions, fears, needs, values, and beliefs. You possess your own particular habits, hot buttons, and hangups.
  • Your bodily makeup—meaning your size, shape, looks, DNA, and metabolism— is yours alone.
  • You have your own singular circumstances. This includes your unique background of experiences and present situation. It involves your opportunities, obligations, constraints, and advantages or disadvantages.
  • Nobody else in the world has your fingerprints, your personality, or your history.

As a result, nobody faces the future the same way as you. Honor that reality as you decide on your goals and determine how best to pursue them.

Shoot for goals that are psychologically tailored to match you as a human being. The better you know yourself and shape your game plan to fit your individuality, the happier and more effective you’ll be in your endeavors.

Too often people set a goal for themselves that’s doomed to fail because it’s incompatible with their makeup. Or their action plan requires behaviors that are psychologically out of sync with their personality. No surprise, their efforts fizzle out. It’s like the clothes in your closet—if they don’t fit, you won’t wear them.

Before you decide on a goal or try to chart how you’ll get there, do some introspection. Make lists of the following:

  1. Your strengths and weaker points
  2. Past successes, honors, or awards you’ve received, and what they imply about you
  3. Past failures or disappointments, and what you attribute them to
  4. Types of work or activities you enjoy and that energize you
  5. Types of work or activities you dislike and that deplete your energy
  6. Your key resources and major constraints

You’re an original. Be who you are and lean hard on your strengths. Focus on what energizes you and makes you happy.

Then follow the fundamental ground rules for goal achievement. I’ll give you four proven components in the formula for achieving big ambitions:

  1. Pick your aiming point. Set a clearly defined goal, write it down, and keep it front of mind.
  2. Be relentless in pursuing your goal. Use obstacles and setbacks to show you the way forward.
  3. Manage your thought patterns, mindset, and mood. Stay optimistic and goal focused.
  4. Track results. Monitor your progress, learn from mistakes, and make corrections as needed.

Trust me. Your possibilities are truly remarkable.
